Your webcam can fail at the worst times. You try and set up that video call but soon find that you’re in the dark. Thankfully most of the time, it’s going to be a simple fix. Here, we look at the possible reasons why your webcam is not working and how you can solve them quickly on your own…
If you have a webcam not working, then it could be a simple connection problem, especially if you have an external webcam (one that isn’t part of your computer). This is one of the most common issues and can simply be that you haven’t plugged it in or it’s been knocked out.
Check that everything is connected properly and also test to make sure that your USB drive isn’t broken by trying to plug into a different on on your device.
Any software needs to be powered by drivers. Usually, these run smoothly, but on rare occasions, they can fail. It’s easy to install or update your drivers, and this will usually fix the problem. If you’re struggling to find the right driver, visit the website that made your webcam (the manufacturer) and they often have the new driver information on there for you to download.
Anti-virus software can be great for protecting your computer, but often, it can be a little overenthusiastic. It could be blocking your webcam. Go into your anti-virus software and check what it’s giving permissions to and what it’s blocking.

When you connect to a website, sometimes you will automatically click off pop-ups without even looking at them. It could be that you have inadvertently blocked a website from being able to access your webcam. If your webcam isn’t working on a particular website, then check your internet settings.
If you’ve recently bought a webcam, then you may find that it’s not compatible with your operating system. When you purchase hardware, it’ll state which operating systems it works with. If this is the problem, you will have to return the webcam and get a compatible replacement.
Sometimes things just don’t work as they should on your computer, and you don’t know why. If you’re not sure what’s up, then you can always do the tried-and-trusted method of turning it off and on again. Sometimes the problem will correct itself!

You’d think that with most webcams, you can just plug them in and they’d work straight away. Some of them are more complicated than that and need to be switched on or use specific keys to activate them. If you’re struggling to get yours on, give your manual a quick read.
