Whether you’re new to working from home or a pro, it can be difficult to avoid distractions. There are many distractions that can happen in a home office, including loud children or unexpected deliveries. If you’re finding that these distractions are making it difficult to get work done, don’t fret. Here are a few ways to minimise or avoid distractions whilst working from home. These will also ensure that each day working from home is productive.

1. Your Desk Setup

The goal of any home office is to simulate the same sort of workspace that you would have in a traditional office. The best way to accomplish this is to create a desk setup that mimics the one you have at your workplace.

Consider having your desk in a room away from busy areas of the house. If it’s not possible to have the desk in another room, you may want to turn your desk away from where people will be interacting in the room. This will prevent you from getting distracted by what others in the room may be doing.

2. Take a Break

While taking a break may seem counterproductive, it can be useful in ensuring that you don’t get burned out. It can be easy to work more when at home, as you are unable to leave your work at the office.

Consider sticking to your usual hourly routine when at home, including the times you usually take breaks. This can help you remain focused and productive so that you are finished with work by the time you would usually be leaving the office.

3. Use a Meeting Room Planner

If it’s difficult for you to remain uninterrupted during work, consider using a meeting planner. This allows you to set expectations of quiet time that can be seen by others in the home, effectively allowing you to avoid distractions whilst working from home. Spouses, older children, roommates, and friends can see the planner outside of the home office, preventing distracting entrances or noises.

There are a number of meeting room planners on the market, including JOAN. this electronic planner has a magnetic mount so it can be hung on a number of surfaces. It displays each meeting as they happen, allowing others to see when you’re free between meetings.

4. Noise-Cancelling Headphones

One way to maximise efficiency in a home office is to work in silence. Ideally, you would be in a home free of loud noises, but this is difficult when your spouse, children, or pets are also in the home.

You can easily work around these noises by using noise-cancelling headphones. This allows your family to continue their normal routines while leaving you with the silence you need to get work done.

5. Turn Notifications Off On Your Phone

If you don’t typically use your phone during the workday, there’s no reason to use it while working from home. Constant notifications can be distracting, preventing you from staying on topic while you’re trying to complete tasks. Putting your phone on “do not disturb” can prevent you from getting those notifications, keeping your phone a bit quieter and less distracting. This way, you avoid distractions whilst working from home.
